Teaching Philosophy

As a dance educator, I believe there is no singular "type" of dancer that must be cultivated in the classroom. Instead, my goal is to inspire every student to discover the excitement and curiosity of what comes next in the world of dance. Dance offers a diverse range of styles, each providing a unique avenue for self-expression through movement. Through these varied forms, students are not only able to explore dance but also connect with other art forms such as music and visual arts, enriching their creative experiences.

Incorporating distinct dance styles from diverse cultures is essential as students progress through their K-12 education. Dance can be integrated into subjects like history, English, and other areas of study, enhancing students' understanding in ways that go beyond traditional academic learning. Dance is both an individual and a collaborative endeavor. By working with peers and engaging with other educators, students develop into well-rounded learners and dancers. They learn to combine their own individuality with the ideas and creativity of those around them. 

Educational dance, though often overlooked in K-12 settings, plays a crucial role in developing fundamental motor skills, cognitive abilities, hand-eye coordination, and higher-level thinking skills that are vital to students' overall growth. My educational philosophy emphasizes providing young dancers with the tools and experiences they need to explore new forms of self-expression. Dance is not merely about replicating movements; it is about discovering one's unique voice, experimenting with how the body moves through space, and cultivating creativity.

As an educator, I aim to prioritize the well-being of my students, both physically and mentally, understanding that their minds and bodies are essential to their success in dance. By infusing my own virtuosity and passion into my teaching, I strive to guide students toward personal growth, whether or not dance plays a central role in their future. My classroom offers a structured environment where students can explore diverse learning processes, fostering a love for artistic expression and inventive thinking. Incorporating a trauma-informed approach in my dance classroom is crucial for creating a safe and supportive environment where all students feel valued. I recognize that behaviors may stem from past trauma, so I approach each student with empathy and focus on building trust. Consistency and a nurturing atmosphere help students feel secure, enabling them to express themselves freely and learn at their own pace. By promoting emotional regulation, resilience, and collaboration, I aim to support students’ growth as dancers and individuals, using dance as a tool for healing and personal development.

One of the most valuable lessons I aim to impart is an understanding of the rich history of dance and the various career paths within the dance world. Whether students choose to pursue dance professionally or not, I am committed to providing them with the confidence to perform, the opportunity to explore distinct dance styles, and the belief that exciting possibilities in the dance world are within their reach.
